February 19, 1945

Around February 19th, 1945, Fritz Wendel from Messerschmitt must have been in Burg near Magdeburg – he reports:

“For some days now, Burg near Magdeburg is the home base of ‘Kommando Welter’, a unit attached to NJG 11. Oberleutant Welter is flying ‘Wilde Sau Nachtjagd’ with Me 262. Compared to the regular aircraft, his machines have added UV Lights, maps lights and an emergency bank indicator. Welter, who is the only one so far to have flown nocturnal missions, already achieved five victories. His five pilots attached to the unit are currently undergoing conversion training. The detachment has six aircraft. The unit is expected to fly combat missions in full strength in the next few days.”[1]Radinger, Willy; Schick, Walter: Me 262 – Entwicklung, Erprobung und Fertigung des ersten einsatzfähigen Düsenjägers der Welt; Aviatic Verlag, Oberhaching; Page 75
